The Day Last Look Teapots Station Please Read Me |
This was my last day in Matlock, and soon I would be on my way down south. So, I had a last look round my accommodation (Stone Lodge), admiring the collection of teapots in the dining room in the process. It seems that the accommodation may soon be on the estate agent's list; will the new owners think in terms of a B&B or in terms of a private residence? After a comfortable breakfast, I made my way to Matlock railway station. The train journey home via St. Pancras was uneventful. That's how I like it!
Before breakfast it was time to have a last look at where I had been staying since Tuesday. The lounge looked out onto hedges and greenery, hiding the main road behind. However, stepping out through the front door I could see that above the road, the cable cars to the Heights of Abraham were still there, waiting for the new day's influx of visitors. Next on the agenda were the elaborate teapots gracing one of the display cabinets in the dining room.
There is a British custom of making elaborate teapots, perhaps in recognition of the national love affair with tea. I don't think the tea pots on display in the dining room were actually used; they looked as if they were for display only - their collector's pride and joy. Nor am I sure of the vintage of the tea pots on display, but they showed a number of themes associated with shopping and with domestic activities. The themes are largely self-explanatory, so, without further ado, enjoy your perusal of the teapots below.
Matlock station was once on the through route from London St. Pancras to Manchester. Today it is the northern terminus of the National Rail line from Derby as well as the southern terminus of Peak Rail, the heritage line (to Rowsley South) which I visited two days ago. It was only a short wait to London via Derby. I took memories of a nice and memorable trip with me!
